I became familiar with Amy Winehouse back in 2006, when the "Rehab" single dropped and the American obsession with the soulful british siren began. Although her sophomore album Back To Black caused quite the commotion in the pop world, as it should have, but it was her 2003 debut album Frank, that introduced the jazzy songstress internationally. My interest grew once I found out that legendary Nas producer Salaam Remi helped to created the album's soundscape. "In My Bed" has the same sample and similar production as "Made You Look" on Nas' 2002 LP God's Son which gave the track an aggressive feel but it's her commanding vocals that truly give it finesse. As of late, I found myself revisiting older releases due to the lack of quality music in 2009 and Frank offers much in terms or replay value. Every song on her debut is unrepentant as each song goes against convention. "Intro/Stronger Than Me" and "Take The Box" are just a a couple of indicators of Amy Winehouse's vocal versatility.
Given the circumstances, Winehouse's music has been overshadowed by her questionable actions as per elaborated and exaggerated by the media but she's a great talent nonetheless. She reminds me of Billie Holiday as both women's pain were carried through voices as they tugged at the heart strings of whoever lent an ear. Frank is a great album and for all those unfamiliar with Winehouse, this is a perfect introduction.
